Printing Pages Meeting
Shelley Rosenberg and I met with Bob Jones and Steve Sarrica to talk about the re-allocation of printing pages for U of M students. Steve is the manager of ITCS Campus Computing Sites and Bob is in charge specifically of printing. It was a great meeting. We talked about a lot of options for getting students more pages. There are a lot of budgetary restraints as well as logistical restraints but they were very interested in our idea of giving people 800 pages to split between Fall and Winter term. This would take some of the variability out of how many pages people use.
Bob and Steve are going to talk with some people in the Student Budget and Accounts office as well as the Provost and their staff about what we can do with this project. The budget is set each year in July so any change would take place officially when they set the new budget. Students wouldn’t see any changes in printing pages until next Fall, if we are successful. Attached are our notes from the meeting:

I suggested to one of your members/candidates, that it would be a better idea to just have an unlimited printing allocation from the CTOOLS site and then maybe 400 pages allowed from any outside websites ie: mirlyn, online encyclopedias… etc. It really doesn’t make sense that I have to pay to print out the millions of lecture slides that professors post on CTOOLS. So all in all, everything that is being printed from CTOOLS should not take away from the printing allocation.

I agree with Lauren. That would relieve some of the burden of having to print reading materials that aren’t put into a course pack and, like she says, power point slides. I would definitely bring it up to them before the budget goes through. See what ITCS can do about it.
Thanks,
Alex
